Our Schools' Second Green Flag
Our school received its second Green Flag from An Taisce on Wednesday 27th May.
Chairperson and Secretary of Green Committee
accepted the flag on behalf of the school from Dr. Mary Stack , Cork
Co. Council.
Mr. Hennessy and Ms. Moynihan also attended the
ceremony which was held in Silversprings Hotel.
There were 120 schools from Co. Cork in attendance over two days.
We raised our new flag on 15th June at a special ceremony attendeded by the whole school and special guest, Brian Cuthbert.

On 15th June, Brian Cuthbert, Manager of the Cork Senior Football Team, came to our school to raise the green flag we had been awarded for Energy awareness.
Have a look at the photos below....

Congratulations to Ms.Moynihan and the Green team!
Here are some photos of the new Green Committee, formed in September. They have been busy reminding all the classes to keep up the good work on waste management and energy, for which we won our first two Green Flags.
You can see them outside with Michael the caretaker, as he was supervising fifth class emptying the compost in October.

Our school garden has become overgrown during the summer months - we will need to tidy up between the beds before any other work can begin.

Our school garden is resting at the moment. We always cover the vegetable plots with plastic as you can see in the photos This is to discourage the growth of weeds.
We were very lucky to have a team of volunteers from Eli Lilly who came to create a sensory garden for us at the beginning of October. They also dug our vegetable garden, weeded the paths and added more gravel. In fact they did two months' work in one day, so the Garden Angels are getting a great rest! There will be plenty of work to do in Spring...
Meanwhile, if any parents have some unwanted carpet pieces to place over the plastic, we would be delighted to use them as weights. Also we would like to add a few more storeys to our BUG HOTEL, so if anyone has unwanted wooden pallets we would love to have them please.. Just let Ms Moynihan know.

Look at all the flowers telling us that Spring has arrived.
Junior Infants planted tulips in pots. Irises are growing outside the prefab.
The bulbs planted in Autumn in the pots in the Gáirdín Draíochta have grown into beautiful grape hyacinths and crocuses.
Mrs. Hellstern's class planted bulbs in pots on their classroom windowsill. They will make wonderful presents for Mother's Day.
Daffodils and snowdrops grow all by themselves along by the fence and under the beech hedge.
Look at all the wonderful photos taken by Mrs. Marron.

April '16 update
Our compost bins have been moved to a new position at the back of the pitch near the old oak tree. One of our Garden Angels, Roger has moved the Tibeten Cherry tree and the Tulip tree to the back of the school to prepare for building works. A parent kindly donated some tomato plants and these are in the sunny rooms by the infant side of the school. They can be seen from the outside. Three raspberry bushes and two strawberry plants (from Agri-aware) were planted recently in our Fruit garden. The rest of our vegetables will be planted when we get some more topsoil.
